Experiment with layout using organic materials
Collect and find organic materials suitible for process
Finalise and display works
Inspired by the work of Spanish designer Pepe Gimeno this project
focused on his teachings and instruction from an online course from
Domestika. In the course students are encouraged to collect oragnic
matter and arrange the found objects into different layouts.
I collected organic matter from local parks. Through this process I
felt a connection between the medium and the work I was making. I
think this kind of process is important for us as designers to
understand the link between what we are using to produce work and
the work produced.
By working with organic matter many layouts are able to be produced
quickly and easily as finalisation is only done when glue is
applied, the process is highly intuitive and layouts seem to emerge
almost subconsciously by the forms suggesting how they might want to
be arranged by their intrinsic characteristics.
I was keen to finalise this work and put it into a displayed format
which suggests that there is a formality to what initially is a very
abstract and informal process. By presenting this work as important
and prepared I think it becomes more prominent to the person
experiencing it.

I worked at a small scale first
Fitting the work into a frame proved an interesting challenge due to the 3D nature of the pieces.
The choice of frame and interactions between the wood of the frame and artwork, glass panel or none change the feeling of the work and provide an interesting case study for how to display and present work in different ways.
